Art of Jazz is laying the foundation for Toronto to become a world centre of jazz through its exhilarating, year-round live performances with international jazz greats and its education program fostering new talent and music appreciation among young Canadians. The Art of Jazz lineup includes the annual Art of Jazz Celebration held at the historic Distillery District. This 5-day event showcases legendary Canadian and international jazz artists. Art of Jazz also offers touring performances by the Art of Jazz Orchestra (Canada’s only national jazz orchestra); and a monthly series of live music organized thematically to explore new artists and areas of music each month. A centre piece of the Art of Jazz program is Community Voices. This outreach program brings jazz legends to work in person with over 200 students from Toronto’s Jane and Finch area. A learning opportunity that lasts a lifetime, Community Voices culminates in a live performance open to the public. Silken's ActiveKids Movement Silken Laumann – Olympic medalist – has recently founded Silken’s ActiveKids Movement (SAM) in response to the growing epidemic of childhood obesity and inactivity sweeping Canada. SAM is a social change movement which inspires, enables and connects everyday champions in our communities to motivate our kids to become physically active. SAM is creating a network of parents and volunteers across the country so that kids can play in the parks, have open gym nights at their schools, make full use of local playgrounds and walk to and from their schools each day safely. SAM will help kids incorporate physical activity into their everyday – and remind kids and parents what it means to PLAY! |
